I have spent years talking to people who are standing on the edge of something great. They have the idea, they have the talent, and they certainly have the desire. But they’re stuck. They are waiting for the “perfect” moment, the right amount of data, or a sudden surge of confidence that never quite seems to arrive.

If you have ever felt like you are running on a treadmill: working hard but staying in the exact same place: I wrote my book, Get On With It, specifically for you.

Overthinking is one of the greatest thieves of potential I see in my business coaching programs. It disguises itself as “preparation” or “due diligence,” but in reality, it’s often just a sophisticated form of procrastination. I want to share with you how to break that cycle, find your momentum, and finally start moving toward the life you want to lead.

The Trap of “I’m Just Not Ready Yet”

We’ve all said it. I’ve said it myself in the past. We convince ourselves that we need one more course, one more book, or one more week of research before we can launch that project or have that difficult conversation.

The truth is, you will never feel 100% ready. Action creates readiness, not the other way around. When you wait to feel ready, you are giving your fears time to grow. Fear loves a vacuum; if you aren’t filling your time with movement, fear will fill it with “what-ifs.”

I often tell my clients that “perfect” is the enemy of “done.” In the world of professional development coaching, I see so many brilliant minds stalled because they are trying to solve problems that don’t even exist yet. They are overthinking step ten when they haven’t even taken step one.

Finding Your ‘Why’: The Engine of Action

To stop overthinking, you need a reason to move that is more powerful than your reason to stay still. I call this finding your “Why.”

When your goals are vague: like “I want to be more successful”: they don’t provide enough fuel to get you through the friction of starting. You need goals that actually inspire you. Think about what you want to achieve in the next 30 days. Is it a promotion? Is it a more resilient team? Is it simply the peace of mind that comes from finishing a long-delayed task?

I use Motivational Mapping to help people understand exactly what drives them. When you understand your core motivators, taking action becomes less about “willpower” and more about alignment. If you know why you are doing something, the how becomes much easier to tackle.

Practical Steps to Stop Waiting and Start Moving

If you’re feeling stuck right now, I want you to try these three strategies that I detail in my book. These aren’t abstract theories; they are practical exercises designed to get you out of your head and into the world.

1. The 5-Minute Rule

When a task feels overwhelming, don’t try to finish it. Just commit to doing five minutes. I’ve found that the hardest part of any journey is the first few inches. Once you’ve started, the psychological barrier drops, and you’ll usually find you want to keep going.

2. Define the “Next Physical Action”

Stop putting “Plan Marketing Strategy” on your to-do list. It’s too big and too vague, which invites overthinking. Instead, write: “Open a blank Word document and type three headlines.” Make it a physical action you can do right now.

3. Embrace “Good Enough” for Now

In my mental resilience training, we talk about the importance of iterative progress. Your first attempt doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to exist. You can’t steer a parked car. Get the car moving, and then you can adjust the direction.

Building Mental Resilience

Taking action involves risk, and risk can be uncomfortable. This is where resilience comes in. I’ve noticed that the most successful people I work with aren’t the ones who never feel doubt: they are the ones who have the tools to move through the doubt.

Resilience isn’t something you’re born with; it’s a muscle you build. Every time you choose action over overthinking, you are strengthening that muscle. You are teaching your brain that you can handle the discomfort of the unknown.

If you feel like your mindset is holding you back, you might benefit from a more structured approach. I offer short courses focused on building a positive mindset and mental toughness. We look at the thinking-feeling-doing cycle and how to interrupt negative patterns before they paralyze you.

The Power of Momentum

Once you start moving, something incredible happens: momentum takes over. Tasks that seemed impossible a week ago start to feel routine. Your confidence grows not because you’ve read more books, but because you have evidence of your own capability.

I see this transformation constantly in my coaching sessions. A client comes in feeling weighed down by a dozen “shoulds,” and through 30-day goal setting, we strip away the noise. We pick one thing, we take one step, and suddenly the fog clears.

Movement creates clarity. If you aren’t sure which path to take, take a step on one of them. You’ll learn more from five minutes of doing than from five hours of thinking.

Are You Ready to Get On With It?
